Item 68. December 17 BoD Meeting Minutes. Misti Anslin Tucker (mta) Thu, Jan 8, 1998 (21:51). 115 lines, 11 responses. Board of Directors Meeting Cyberspace Communications 12/17/1997 INITIAL GAVEL: 7:45 IN ATTENDANCE: valerie mates, Steve Andre, Dan G., Jan Wolter, Patricj Gibson, Jeff Kaplan, Scott helmke, Mark Conger, IrvingP, Jiffer WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS: Welcome back to the returning board members: TREASURERS REPORT: see item 64, Coop. PUBLICITY COMMITTEE: There will be a GREX ad in the 1998 ConFusion Program Book thanks to Ken Josenhans and Valerie Mates. We'll be lloking into placing free or low cost ads for the parenting conference in local parenting magazines around Ann Arbor. An ad in Current Magazine runs $30. Mark Conger has reprinted the Grex Handbook, though only a few copies it hasn't been updated yet. Patrick Gibson has offred 10% on any repairs at his shop (Village Repair) at Maple Village behind Schlotsky's Deli to all GREXers. He has also offered to display GREX materials in his shop. TREADSURERS REPORT: SUMMARY GREX lost $468 last month because of the cost of T-shirts. If we adjust for the cost of the t's - which is money we will recoup, we gained $80. Thanks to our new member: other. We have 99 members, of which 85 are currently paid up. The remainder are recently expired and are in a grace period. This month, so far: we have 2 new members and the auction has netted $223. The phone bill is still a problem. We ned to push t-shirts to recoup our investment. Patrick Gibson has offered to stock a few t-shirts and sell them out of his shop. Steve Andre has gotten Ameritech to write us a new ISDN bill, but it remains to be seen how much of the extra charges they'll write off. TECHNICAL COMMITTEE: THE 670: is mostly ready to go. Steve Weiss has bought extra memory for the 670 -- it cost $248. The last remaining task before we're ready for a switchover to complete a security sweep, which Jared is handling. Since much of the staff will be unavailable for the holidays, the target date to have the 670 up is saturday, January 3rd. Scott will do a backup that morning, immediately before the changeover, to minimize any risk of data loss. GREX has had a mail upgrade thanks to the efforts of a vadal. (Thanks, Marcus, for handling this!) Pine still doesn't work for the staff but seems to be fine for the users. Scott has purchased an ethernet hub. We need to measure our power usage at least after the changeover, if not both before and after, so that we can adjust our electricity payments to actual usage. We might want to consider getting rid of some old SUN 3 and SUN 4 stuff to make more room at the pumkin. AUCTION REPORT: The auction closed December 6. December 18th the items will revert to the second highest bidder. ELECTION REPORT: Of the 8 candidates, all four incumbants were reelected. BUY SPARE 670 PARTS AND A DISK? At the moment the 260 is the backup for the new 670. Since the 260 runs different software that the 670, relying on the 260 as a backup means maintaining additions and upgrades on both machines or keeping a list of changes that will have to be made before the backup system can be implemented. This is not a satisfactory solution since staff time is rapidly becoming our scarcest resource. The staff suggests that a better solution is to buy a spare motherboard and a spare CPU board. The motherboard may be hard to find, but the CPU board shouldn't be a problem. The staff estimates the cost at $50 for a spare CPU board and $750 for a spare motherboard. The staff also requests 2 gig of memory be added to the 670, at a cost of aprox. $350. MOTION: I move that the Board of Directors for Cyberspace Communications allocate $400 for a new SCSI disk of at least 2 G capacity. Valerie: Motioned Scott: Seconded 7/0/0 - the motion passed unanimously REQUEST: The Technical Committee strongly recommends that the Board authorize it to look into spare parts for the 670. The treasurer goes on record as being concerned with GREXes ability to swing the expense. T_SHIRT FINANCES: MOTION: I move that the Cyberspace Communications Board of Directors modify the amount of money authorized to Rob Argy in 12/96 for a t-shirt order to be $736.60. Mark: motion Valerie: seconded 7/0/0 The motion passed unanimously. NEW BUSINESS: None FINAL GAVEL: 9:00pm 11 responses total. ---------- (68) #1 Steve Gibbard (scg) Fri, Jan 9, 1998 (00:45). 1 line. I was at this meeting, but not mentioned in the minutes, too. ---------- (68) #2 Mark A. Conger (aruba) Fri, Jan 9, 1998 (01:03). 1 line. And STeve was not there. ---------- (68) #3 nudge nudge nudge (davel) Fri, Jan 9, 1998 (06:32). 4 lines. > Since much of the staff will be unavailable for the holidays, > the target date to have the 670 up is saturday, January 3rd. So, are we on the 670 yet? 8-{)] ---------- (68) #4 Valerie Mates (valerie) Fri, Jan 9, 1998 (10:36). 4 lines. At this point we're waiting for someone to do the final security sweep. The problem is that we've only got maybe 2 people on staff who are qualified to do this, and both of them are busy having personal lives at the moment. I'm not sure how long this will take. ---------- (68) #5 STeve Andre' (steve) Fri, Jan 9, 1998 (11:42). 2 lines. heh. Good point about lives. I'm busy restructuring things at the moment so I can deal with this issue. ---------- (68) #6 Valerie Mates (valerie) Fri, Jan 9, 1998 (12:13). 1 line. That is great news STeve! Thanks!!!! ---------- (68) #7 Misti Anslin Tucker (mta) Fri, Jan 9, 1998 (12:29). 2 lines. *sigh* Sorry, Steve (scg) That's what happens when I write down peoples names rather than logins. Yes, I now remember that you were there. ---------- (68) #8 David Cahill (dpc) Fri, Jan 9, 1998 (22:03). 4 lines. It's *terrific* that steve will be able to do the security sweep! Valerie told me at Larry Kestenbaum's fundraiser that such a sweep can involve closing up to 200 security holes (!) and that she didn't know when it could be done. ---------- (68) #9 Patrick Gibson (gibson) Fri, Jan 9, 1998 (23:08). 1 line. What's a personal life? ---------- (68) #10 Valerie Mates (valerie) Sat, Jan 10, 1998 (17:43). 3 lines. No no. The sweep involves looking for hundreds of *potential* security holes. (I have a list of 200 or so in a file somewhere). There are hundreds of things to check for, not hundreds of holes to close. ---------- (68) #11 David Cahill (dpc) Sun, Jan 11, 1998 (13:18). 1 line. I thought #8 meant what #10 said--potential holes, obviously. 8-)
